General description of the collection: Charles Herron papers include a marriage license and various certificates including graduation diplomas from Army Staff College (ASC), 1908; Wabash College, no date; and United States Military Academy (USMA), 1937. It also contains distinguished service cross certificates, 1945-46; "Program of the ceremonies attending the burial of an unknown and unidentitied American soldier who lost his life during the World War"; and Master of Ceremonies, the Secretary of War, dated 1921.

Major General (MG) Charles Douglas Herron graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1899 and began his career as an infantryman. In 1905, he was posted to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas where he attended the Infantry-Cavalry School and the Army Staff College. From 1908 to 1910, he was assigned to the staff of the United States Military Academy. After several short assignments, he was sent to the Panama Canal Zone at the end of 1914.
